If you want to know what type of RAM you have – DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5, here are some methods to check the DDR RAM type in Windows 10.
Check the DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 RAM type viaTask Manager.
In Windows 10, without third-party software, there is no column that directly indicates whether you have DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 RAM. To find out what type of DDR your RAM sticks are, you must first determine the speed of your RAM.
Here’s how to check RAM speed with Task Manager in Windows 10.
- Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open the Task Manager. You can also right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager to open it.
- Click on the Performance tab.
- Click on Memory in the left pane.
From there you can find out the speed, size and other information about the RAM memory. Since each generation of RAM has its own speed range, the speed of the RAM can tell you which type of DDR RAM it is.
- If the RAM speed is between 4800 MHz and 8400 MHz, it is a DDR5 RAM.
- If the speed of the RAM memory is between 2133 MHz and 3200 MHz, it is a DDR4 RAM memory.
- If the RAM speed is between 1066 MHz and 1866 MHz, it is DDR3 RAM.
- A RAM speed of less than 800 MHz means you have old DDR2 memory, which is no longer supported by most modern motherboards.
The screenshot above shows that I have 2 sticks of RAM at 2667 MHz. Since DDR4 RAM has speeds between 2133 and 3200 MHz, this means that my RAM sticks are DDR4 RAM.
Check RAM type in Windows 10 via CMD
Another, faster way to check RAM speed (to determine what type of DDR RAM you have) is to run a simple command from the command line.
Type cmd or Command Prompt in the search box or from the Windows 10 Start menu. Click the command prompt in the search results to open it.
In the command prompt window, type the following command and press Enter.
wmic MEMORYCHIP obtain manufacturer, speed
This special command tells you the manufacturer and speed of the RAM memory installed in your PC. Once you know the speed of the RAM, you can determine the type of RAM using the following table.
DDR memory type check with CPU-Z
To better determine the type and speed of your RAM, as well as other RAM information, we recommend using a popular software program called CPU-Z. CPU-Z is a free program that can show you information about your CPU, RAM and motherboard.
You can download CPU-Z from the link below, preferably the zip version so you don’t have to install it.
After downloading, open the application and click on the Memory tab. From here you can see all the information about the RAM installed on the computer. The RAM type is displayed under General.
To physically identify the type of RAM when not installed
Look at the specs on the RAM label. Normally, the type of RAM should be listed on the label. Otherwise, you can determine whether the RAM memory is DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 based on the speed specified.
If only the RAM model is listed on the key label, the RAM speed is usually indicated as part of the model. For example, the AD4U266638G19-B has a RAM speed of 2666 MHz.
