OnePlus announced three new phones as part of its new 9 series during its live broadcast on Tuesday. These phones are the result of a collaboration with Hasselblad and are said to be the best cameras ever used in OnePlus phones.

In this article, we’ll compare the OnePlus 9 to the last iteration of the 8 series, the OnePlus 8T, to see if the new phone is worth the upgrade or if you’re better off buying the old one for a relatively low price.

The OnePlus 9 and 8T are almost identical on the front. Both phones have a screen that covers the front of the phone, with a pinhole camera in the top left corner.

However, the difference is at the back, more specifically in the camera module. The OnePlus 9’s large lenses and Hasselblad logo clearly distinguish the phones.

Both phones have the same screen size of 6.55 inches. However, the OnePlus 9 has an advantage over the 8T because it has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, which is 402 pixels per inch more than the 8T.

Other than that, it’s pretty much the same thing. Both phones have the same 20:9 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass.

In this regard, the partnership with Hasselblad is one of the phone’s biggest marketing points this year.

Front camera

Both phones have the same front camera module. Sony’s 16-megapixel IMX471 sensor is sharp enough to take great photos in almost all lighting conditions.

Primary room

The main camera of the OnePlus 8T is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 camera with optical and electronic image stabilization.

While it’s a great camera, it pales in comparison to the OnePlus 9’s 48-megapixel Sony IMX689 camera, which has a much larger sensor that allows for much more detailed images.

Ultra-wide angle camera

The OP9 ultra-wide-angle camera is equipped with a 50 megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor and a free-form lens that has virtually no fisheye distortion. The 8T has a standard 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 123-degree angle of view. They are still badly needed in the ultra broadband area.

Other room

In addition to the basic and ultra-wide-angle cameras, the 8T has a 5-megapixel macro lens and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens. You’ll miss the OP9’s 5-megapixel macro, but the monochrome lens remains.

This is another major difference between the two phones. The OP9 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 888 and an Adreno 660 GPU. On the other hand, the 8T features an older Snapdragon 865 paired with an Adreno 650 GPU.

On paper the OP9 is faster than the 8T, but in daily use you won’t notice the difference. Where the OP9 really excels is in scenarios such as gaming or heavy multitasking where you’re switching quickly between applications.

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 8T come in two variants, but only one of both devices is available in the US.

  • The OnePlus 9 is available in 8/128GB variant for INR 49,999 ($729) and 12/256GB for INR 54,999.
  • The 8T is available in 8/128 GB for INR 40,499 and 12/256 GB for INR 43,999 ($599).

Note that the OP9’s memory is LPDDR5, which makes it faster than the LPDDR4 memory in the 8T. Storage, on the other hand, is identical.

The two phones are identical in this regard as well. Both phones have a 4500 mAh battery and a normal charge of 65T.

The OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 8T have a lot in common. Now that these are available at much lower prices, the question of who to choose is pretty hard to answer.

If you are looking for a new phone, the OP9 is the best choice. For the price, the phone has excellent hardware and features. But if you want to upgrade your 8T, it’s not urgent.

Sure, you can get a better phone, but the 8T is pretty much equal to anything you’d want. But if you really want to get your hands on this Hasselblad camera system, upgrading is the way to go.
